Genus Loci and Other Worlds; 1980s Paintings and Etchings
Throughout this decade I was working as an artist assistant, in the studios of first-generation abstract expressionists James Brooks, Hedda Sterne, and Richard Pousette-Dart; and also hanging out nearly every night with the NY Downtown Music Scene, listening to improvised music. In my own studio I was working with gesture and automatism, building on the many threads of influence and idea from my Surrealist and Ab-Ex mentors, thinking about coalescences of energy and form, and conjuring lyric images that appeared while listening to free jazz.
